Tutorial 2- How To Keep Your Anti-virus And Firewall Software Up To Date
Check for updates for your anti-virus, firewall or Internet Security suite every day before you connect to the Internet for email or to surf. This will ensure that you are protected against the latest threats before you download your email or go surfing. Most anti-virus and firewall software is pre-configured to notify you if any updates become available while you are connected to the Internet, so make sure that you download these updates as well to give complete protection.
This tutorial decribes how to manually check for updates for your anti-virus and/or firewall software. The software used in these screenshots is Symantec's Norton Internet Security, an Internet Security suite that includes anti-virus, Spyware, Adware and firewall protection, but most anti-virus and firewall software has a similar mechanism for checking for updates.
Step 1: Open your anti-virus or firewall program and click on the Update button. In the program used in these screenshots the update mechanism is called LiveUpdate so the update button is called LiveUpdate.
Step 2: Click the Next button to begin checking for updates.
Step 3: Your anti-virus or firewall software will then try to connect to the Internet to check for updates. Some programs connect to the Internet automatically in the background, as in this screen shot, but if your program prompts you to connect to the Internet click the Connect button.
Step 4: Having connected to the Internet, your anti-virus or firewall software will check for updates.
Step 5: If there are any updates available for your anti-virus or firewall software they will be displayed, usually in a list as illustrated in this screeen shot. Click the Next button to begin downloading the updates. (If there are no updates available your anti-virus or firewall software will display a message informing you that it is up to date. In this case, click the Finish button and then close your anti-virus or firewall program.)
Step 6: The updates are downloaded and are then installed on your computer.
Step 7: When the updates have been successfully downloaded and installed click the Finish button and close your anti-virus or firewall program. If a message is then displayed asking you to restart your computer to complete the installation of the updates, click the Restart button to restart your computer..
